Lift Right to Keep Your Back Safe!

Lifting safetyWe know you’re tough, but a back injury can still put you out of commission. It’s easy to make the mistake of lifting something that’s too heavy or lifting carelessly, especially when we’re in a hurry or thinking about the next thing we need to do.

Proper lifting really takes only a second. Here is a quick refresher on the steps for a safe lift.

  1. Never lean over your load, and never twist or swing during your lift.
  2. Get close to the object you’re lifting.
  3. To execute the lift, bend at the hips and knees to get under the weight.
  4. During the lift, keep a flat lower back, head up, shoulders back. Use the power of the major muscle groups in your core and legs; don’t lift with just your back, and don’t twist.
  5. When carrying, keep the load close to your body and maintain good posture. Lead with your hips to change direction.
  6. When setting the load down, be sure to keep that flat back as you bend with your hips and knees again.

Take a split-second to perform safe lifting and protect your back!
